Te Marae

 Our Marae

As a part of our celebrations unit this term, Kauri Block is celebrating our history, learning our pepeha and designing a marae.

WALTS:
  • know our pepeha
  • know the meaning behind the structures in a wharenui
  • know how to design and build a wharenui.

Our challenge is to:

  • research our whakapapa and present using the Tellagami app
  • question and research the meaning behind the structures of a wharenui
  • be able to problem solve to design and create a wharenui.

Designing and Building a Wharenui

WALTS:
  • Know how to design a wharenui with all the traditional features
  • understand why it is necessary to meet the success criteria when building a model
  • understand why it is important to use the appropriate materials when building a model

Your Challenge:
  • Choose to design and make a model of a wharenui.

You will need to think about:
  • How you are going to make your model strong and stable
  • How you are going to join the different parts of your model together
  • How you are going to include the traditional parts of your wharenui
  • How you are going to decorate the different features of your wharenui

Watch the following Youtube clip to help you create your own model. You can also look at the pictures to help you with your design. Remember these are just one way of building your wharenui.

Design Specification

Bankwood School would like to build a wharenui that:-
  • will have at least one window, a door  and verandah.
  • will have four walls and a roof in the shape of a traditional wharenui.
  • will fit on to the size of the template base
  • will use only two kinds of materials
  • will be painted decorated at the entrance of the wharenui.
  • will include the:
                    Heke
                    Tahuhu
                    Nga heke
                    Koruru
                    Maihi
                    Raparapa

                    Tekoteko

Wharenui

  • Look carefully at the graphics below and then visit the websites to learn more about the parts of a wharenui.
  • Take notes of your learning as you will need to know what parts to include and what they mean in your own wharenui design.

  • Click on the link below and complete the activities.

Your mission:
  • Watch the following Educreation app tutorial. You will notice it is very much like the Explain Everything app.
  • Design a lesson on the different parts of a wharenui. Remember to use the drawing tool and record your voice to explain your learning and thinking. This will also be used as a part of your planning for your own design.

Our Pepeha

It is important you know where you come from in order to be able to introduce yourself on the marae. Create your pepeha using the template below. You will then need to practise with a buddy before you record it using the Tellagami app.

Tena koutou, katoa                                  Greeting

Ko.......................... te waka                     My canoe is
Ko.......................... te maunga                My mountain is

No reira, tena koutou, tena koutou, tena tatou katoa.
Therefore, greetings to you, greetings to you, greetings to us all.

Unfortunately I was unable to put macrons above some of the letters and this will change the pronunciation. We will talk about this in class. We also need to remember there are many different ways to give our pepeha; this is just one simple version. They can differ from whanau to whanau, iwi to iwi.

An example for you.

  8. Aryan we can't go back home because some māraes can be far away from peoples homes. Like my mārae is 5 hrs away do you think I'm going to spend about 35 hrs going back and forth to my mārae. I don't think so. So think about it.

  13. Daytona and Shayarna, thank you for trying to answer Aryan's question but you do need to stop and think about it being your job to teach people that have no experience of a marae or Maori culture as they really don't know.
